b. Equal parts of a whole

If a whole pizza is divided into 4 equal parts and you ate one slice, then what is left $\frac{3}{4}$ or 3 of 4 equal parts.

A mixed number consist of a whole number part and a fractional part. $1\frac{3}{4}$ has number 1 as a whole number and $\frac{3}{4}$ is the fraction part.

Examples:
a. $\frac{5}{8}$ is a fraction
b. $\frac{9}{2}$ is a fraction
c. $2\frac{1}{7}$ is a mixed number

Types of Fraction
A. Proper Fraction - numerator is greater than the denominator, like 5/8 or $\frac{5}{8}$.

B. Improper Fraction - denominator is greater than the numerator, like 9/2 or $\frac{9}{2}$.

How to write fraction as a whole number or a mixed number?

Examples:
1. $\frac{6}{3}$ = 6 ÷ 3 = 2, whole number

2. $\frac{8}{5}$ , use synthetic or long division to get a remainder.

The mixed fraction is  $1 \frac{3}{5}$

How to write mixed number as a fraction?

Examples:
1. $1\frac{3}{4}$
Multiply the denominator with the whole number and add the numerator. The result is your new numerator and retain the denominator.

Numerator: 4 x 1 + 3 = 7
Denominator: 4
so the result is always an improper fraction, $\frac{7}{4}$

2. $2\frac{6}{11}$
Numerator: 11 x 2 + 6 = 22 + 6 = 28
Denominator: 11
Result: $\frac{28}{11}$
