Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions are fractions that have the same value. For instance, $\frac{1}{2}= \frac{2}{4} =\frac{3}{6}$ are equivalent fractions.

How to find equivalent fractions?
A. Using multiplication, multiply both numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number.
 $\frac{10}{20}= \frac{10 x 3}{20 x 3}=  \frac{30}{60}$

B. Using division, divide both numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number.
 $\frac{10}{20}= \frac{10 ÷ 2}{20÷ 2}=  \frac{5}{10}$

Thus, $ \frac{5}{10}$, $ \frac{10}{20}$, and
$ \frac{5}{10}$ are equivalent fractions.

How to determine if two fractions are equivalent?
Use cross multiplication and compare the cross products. If the products are equal then the two fractions are equivalent.

Example:  Are  $\frac{2}{7}$ and  $\frac{8}{28}$ equivalent?
2 x 28 = 56
7 x 8 = 56
The cross products are equal, thus they are equivalent fractions.
